Bauxite - A Brief History

From the 1960's into the late 1980's, bauxite was mined and exported from the Dominican Republic by Alcoa.  During this time, the basic infrastructure was built and is still in use today including mine access, haul roads, port and loading facilities.  Alcoa mined and exported over 30 million tons while they operated the mine.  When Alcoa terminated operations, they donated the mine and facilities to the government.  In 2007, SBD signed a 12 year agreement with the government to explore, mine and export bauxite.

 

 

 

Reserves

Bauxite reserves in the Pedernales region of the Dominican Republic are in the millions.  SBD is currently mining the deposit opened in the 1970's and will continue operations until additional capacity is required.  SBD is continuously conducting exploration by digging test pits throughout known areas of deep deposits, logging this data for future mining endeavors.  Vast reserves at higher elevations are currently under review for testing and exploration by the Federal Mining Department.  Once permission is finalized for testing, SBD intends to continue exploring and defining the ore bodies.

 

Specifications

All of the bauxite in the Pedernales Region is similar and can be characterized as "Caribbean Bauxite".  Similar to the bauxite deposits found in Jamaica, our bauxite is high in iron and low in silica.  The Metallurgical grade bauxite is lower in silica than the Non-Metals grade, which is ideal as a raw material for the manufacture of Portland Cement.
